WHAT’S HAPPENING!

ROD CORDON

Twelve years have gone by since Rod Cordon put his first set of tires on the track at I-70 Speedway in the dash series.   After many seasons as a Dash Series driver, Rod moved on to the Modified Series.  After obtaining his goal of a championship in the 2002 season, the Cordon Racing Crew  will be running a  Ford Late Model.   For many years, Rod has ran under the #17, when he decided to move up to the late model series, his number was already registered by late model driver, Jenny White.  So, this year he will be running under the #12.

Also new for Rod and his crew this year, is that they will be joining forces with the driver, car owner and crew of the former #23 Dash Series Driver, Brent Fasse.  (Brent’s Father, Greg Fasse bought Rod’s Modified after the end of the 2002 season.)

Last Sunday, we caught up with Rod in the newly built 4 plus stall shop, which no doubt they will be spending many hours in, for the upcoming 2003 season. (Shop provided by Greg Fasse.)  When Rod was asked, what his plans are going to be for the upcoming season, his replied that he will not be racing every race this year.  Anyone who knows Rod or is family, I am sure will find that hard to believe.

As the topic of the track at I-70 emerged, he stated that his favorite turn was turn 2.  Not only for the way he can use that turn to get a good run and make many successful passes, but also for the dogleg that is there when you come out of the turn.

When asked what he liked about the track as a whole, he responded with “CRASH FACTOR, from a spectators point of view, the high banks at I-70, can make for some pretty spectacular crashes.

As I was leaving, I just had to ask, if he had any advise for anyone who is getting started, or moving up.  He thought for quite a while, and said, “Speed kills, have your friends drive Chevy’s.”  Now, on a more serious note, he says, “Slower is Faster!”

With Rod’s skills as a driver, there is no doubt that he and his team will have a great 2003 season.
